Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan Matrix

This chart below shows the benefits included in each of the standard Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans. Every insurance company offering these plans must at a minimum make available Plans A, B and C or F. As of June 1, 2010, Plans E, H, I, and J are no longer available for sale.

Each of the Medigap plan types cover the following benefits:

Hospitalization:

Part A co-insurance plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare benefits end.

Medical Expenses:

Part B co-insurance (generally 20% of Medicare-approved expenses) or copayments for hospital outpatient services. Plans K, L, and N require insured members to pay a portion of Part B co-insurance or co-payments.

Blood:

First 3 pints of blood each year.

Hospice:

Part A coinsurance.

The different plan types are differentiated in the way that they cover:

  • Basic benefits
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Foreign travel emergencies
